Pandeconomics

People are dying. People are fired. People are broke. People are numbers.

The first sentence refers to the pandemic. The other three are day-to-day economics, now stressed by the first one.

I am neither an economist, a capitalist, a communist, a business manager or an union delegate. Therefore I cherished the dream of this intensification of the last three sentences forcing a change to the paradigm of global economy. Reality has another agenda.

On TV the other day an expert said businesses must be competitive or fall. Small and big business managers said there is no margin for a raise on minimum wages. Sacking is mainstream and governments shrug beatifically while giving sermons on not having illusions. The vision on unemployment keeps the same. Are jobs lacking? Too bad. Life goes on to the employed. The others are cast to get in line for social welfare whilst business managers refuse to both paying taxes and keeping jobs. The reason? Businesses must be competitive.

How many businesses are based on offshores and export their job vacancies? How many business headquarters are nothing but post office boxes? How many workers are enslaved on countries with no human rights? Why are these numbers seldom told or not told at all?

Politicians and business managers make haste to discredit such questions by labeling them as extremist, radical and demagogical. The pandemic will not end this. When catastrophe occurs, people in power do not come to their senses. They will only increase their efforts to maintain power.

Pandeconomics means the stressing of people being fired and getting blamed for not working. They will continue to be labelled as parasites by the ones who fired them so that taxes for social welfare are cut. Social classes become only three. Bosses, workers and unemployed. In other words, extremely rich, survivors and extremely poor.

The Prison Of Careers

We live in a time when our professional choices are for life, if we are lucky enough to have a steady job. Sometimes I wonder how things were before the existence of the social state. A world of classes, I suppose. Workers and bosses, slaves and owners. Unfortunately the social state has not taken bold steps yet. Politicians keep seeing both unemployment and careers as something they are not responsible for. Minimum conditions of dignity are still taken as negotiable.

Each citizen wastes the entire life dreading the loss of income enough for bread on the table. Once a job is acquired we must stick to the damn set of tasks because our lives literally depend on it. We may boast our pride for our freedom and democracy, but the truth is we still live in a society based upon fear. Some political wings keep believing and spreading the doctrine of fear as the motivation to work and prosperity.

If keeping the means to survive is so demanding, changing jobs and abandoning careers is insane. There is absolutely no social structure to endorse a citizen with free will to chose how to live. One might be totally bonkers to even pronounce such a blasphemy. Reality punches us in the face with the cold fist of supply and demand. We are not in this world to self-fulfillment. We’re here to be winners, to be successful, to become the few capable of making money pour into our hands. Even if that takes making our soul miserable.

Abandoning or keeping a career is a choice between two suicides.

Insoluble

“Your situation is insoluble”, they told me yesterday, meaning I have to decide whether to get back to the job that burned me out or taking an unpaid leave. Things would be much easier if there were jobs to apply to. With this Covid-19 situation one can’t even flip burgers.

I’ve been investing my time on my Etsy shop and the monetization of this blog. Ads got started last Wednesday. Now it is a matter of providing good enough content and spreading the word. It is said the main keys are consistence and persevering. Easy as pie.

I have a strong admiration for survivors, people with keen eye and shrewd audacity, capable of evaluating strategies to make the best possible living without taking advantage of others. My wish is to be capable of rising after collapse, to the point of having no more immobilizing fear. If only I was certain of being successful with these online activities…
